JUNE GLOOM GHOST HUNT -an adventure into the paranormal world of TWITTER

•June 14, 2009 • 1 Comment

FISCH logo (2)LAST NIGHT!

Last night was really something, thanks to my twitter (and now real-life) friend George Ruiz, who organized a ghost hunting event along with TEAM FISCH. (Forensic Investigations of Southern California)

George invited 20 of his closest friends from the world of Social Media- to you and me that means the INTERNET. People who are having huge success in the cyber world, with hundreds of thousands of followers on their web shows, twitter, facebook, video blogs, etc. Especially TWITTER. What is TWITTER? It’s fun, that’s what. Sign up and follow some people (see list below for starters)

TWITTER… I was turned on to twitter a little over a year ago by Steve Garfield (who was “tweeting” from SXSW at the time) and my frequent creative collaborator, Lee Stranahan, my go-to guy for all things interesting about the internet. One of the earliest “TWITTER friendships” I struck up was with George Ruiz, who I shot messages to now and then concerning common interests- martial arts, movies, tech toys, and…eventually, ghost hunting.

FAST FORWARD… to a few weeks ago, when George mentioned on TWITTER that he wanted to go on an investigation with a real team. WELL… I just happen to be a member of one of the foremost paranormal investigation and cleaning teams in the country, TEAM FISCH. So George and his lovely wife, Cynthia, along with friend & famed photographer Vu Bui, ventured with us on a small investigation at a house beneath the Hollywood Sign. Not too much happened- a couple of cold spots, but it was really fun. (It’s always FUN) A few very strange EVPs (electronic voice phenomenon) appeared on the digital recordings upon later review- always interesting, because you rarely hear them in real life, but they tend to show up later on digital devices. Sometimes they are very clear and disconcerting, especially when they speak directly to you.

#jggh… George was hooked and we began plans for last night’s hunt. An ideal location was secured by TEAM FISCH lead investigator and founder, Steve Trousdale, and investigator David Krohn, at a secret address in LaCrescenta, just north of LA. The invites went out and the hunt was on!

Saturday night, June 13th… There were tweets aplenty, all filled with excited anticipation. As nine o’clock approached, I stood outside the house in the cul-de-sac, sipping my New Orleans coffee when I heard a familiar voice half-whispering from the dark. It was George, who then led me around the corner where I beheld a group of twenty spectre-like figures in the shadows, emitting flashes from cameras and camera phones, and typing away on TWITTER. As they stepped into the streetlight, the self-proclaimed “tech geeks” were not so geeky at all, and turned out to be a great looking group of interesting, excited guys and gals, full of energy, conversation, and probably caffeine. I was very impressed seeing so many people in real life after following most of them for so long on TWITTER and watching their various web shows. For some reason, I half expected “closet case couch potato computer geek shut-ins”. Not the case at all! Everyone was fun, respectful, and easy to deal with. (We had to walk the house in several small groups, requiring an undo amount of patience from everybody involved) The night’s crowd was generously taken in by David & Alisa Krohn, who allowed us to congregate on their patio near the haunted property. We had chairs, a cooler of beer, a little space heater, and some groovy lite jazz playing in the background (my Uncle George’s Chromonica Jazz CD) and some incredible conversations. The night was a great success. I think everyone had a really memorable time.

The Investigation… There were 5 groups that walked the house. The first and last groups (I happened to go with both) had the most activity: spiked meters, lots of cold spots, banging, footsteps, etc. There’s definitely an entity or two occupying the house. Nothing that came across as nasty or evil. It felt like it was playing hide-and-seek with us at times, moving from room to room. Evidence will be posted throughout today and the next few days as we review digital recordings and video. We’ll also be receiving plenty from our guests in the coming days, I assume. Sign in here (it’s quick, free & easy): TEAM FISCH to view video, photographic and audio evidence from this investigation and many, many previous investigations.

Here’s to a great evening with friends, old and new! I highly recommend it, with or without the paranormal. (P.S. Everybody got a free parting gift, a DVD copy of the early edition of my first feature film, “The Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde Rock N Roll Musical”)

A special thanks goes out to the members of  TEAM FISCH, besides Steve and myself, onhand with plenty of help and expertise were Gary, Nathan, Nick, Calvin and David.

OKAY! Here are your instructions:

First, go to www.twitter.com and sign up (if you haven’t already) It’s quick, easy, fast & free. THEN… start following some cool people and start tweeting (writing messages about what you’re up to, into, or even nothing at all- in 140 characters or less) you can also send pictures, video, music, etc. AND…if you come across someone weird or bothersome, just BLOCK them and they’re gone forever. No such thing as twitter Ghosts. I’m posting a new song every day during June (see my earlier ARTIST OF THE MONTH post)

Here’s the list of super cool TWITTER people from the June 13th June Gloom Ghost Hunt, (in no particular order) You’ll want to use their twitter usernames, (eg: Lee Stranahan is @stranahan) Search on TWITTER: #jggh for tweets about last night.

ALAN BERNHOFT  “BEATLESQUE ONE”

#27, top 100 Cds of 2008

Here we will not claim the relevant position in parade of successes.  Or critical and public recognition. Much less success in sales worldwide. So why is not the primary objective of this project.  Let’s just celebrate the tribute to a style of composition immortalized by Beatles.  As the name indicates, Beatlesque One is a collection of songs in the style of the fab four, created by musician, composer, actor, producer and writer of scripts, Alan Bernhoft.  The U.S. joined the California tracks projects, like the movie Desperately Seeking Paul McCartney and his children Playdate disc, to display their expertise in recreating in their own compositions, the aura unmatched in the 60s.

Bernhoft played the instruments, recorded and produced all the tracks in his studio AIM.  Did the exact sound of the sixties bands, with a perfect instrumental and vocal production. Penetrated the intricacies of melodic and metric frame of sixties pop and produced some of the most precious pearls of the sixties-not born in the sixties. If some songs may sound like mere tribute to the Beatles, others could have been saved by them and be in the pantheon of timeless classics.

The opening track, the energy and youth “Keep Your Hands Off My Baby” perfectly emulates the first stage of the Beatles.  The beautiful “Magic Everywhere” is a treasure that will not import it was composed yesterday or is left of Rubber Soul.  “Someday” Quico gets hit in the piano, with progressions of chords that regret any power Popper and a memorable chorus absurdly – hard to believe that was not written by the genius of Paul McCartney. It anthem of the 60s, had their feet up and the top of the tiozinhos sung today, with tears in her eyes, remembering the summer of love: “Sunshine Girl”.

Escrita para crianças, “Playdate” exala ingenuidade e beleza melódica e é outra que revive a fase ‘yeah, yeah, yeah’, dos Beatles. Writing for children, “Playdate” exudes melodic ingenuity and beauty and is another step that revives the ‘yeah, yeah, yeah,’ the Beatles.  “Winter Ocean Mary Go Round” travel to the psychedelic world of John Lennon and the lovely “Springtime Love, love the melody and heavenly vocal harmonies, recalling the Beach Boys were also sixty icons. Beatlesque One makes us miss a season they do not live, and thanks for the interest of talented contemporaries such as Alan Bernhoft, in perpetuating the art of true pop song.

My third CD release for 2009 is a collection of dreamy psychedelic poems put to music, sung in a “Jim Morrison-esque” rock crooning style.

BEEN DREAMING- “Now I’m searching down the backroads for that elusive trail called sanity”
BEAUTY & THE SIMPLE (Mark Bollinger)- “Maybe if I change my mind about what I believe is wonderful, someone might think that’s beautiful”
SANCTUARY- “I turn and catch the Mourning Wind as she weeps beneath a tree”
THE TIDE- “When dreams of a distant port that mark the journey’s end are washed away with the tide”
DON’T FEEL THAT WAY- “These lights that shine lead my mind asunder”
THE DARK TRUTH- “The night is cloudy, in my head the spectres gather for the kill”
I WANNA SAY IT- “Dontcha wanna break outta the chains? Dontcha dream about a free spin?”
10,000 TINY STRIPED VIRGIN ANGELS- “Wandering crystalline manna, White incubator walls”
MOTHER TELEVISION- “Blame it on yourselves, cause you’ve been sold”

Smooth Jazz Harmonica, Great American Standards, With Guest Artist Hal Blaine

Smooth Jazz Harmonica, Great American Standards, With Guest Artist Hal Blaine

My second release for 2009, I am particularly proud of- it’s been a long time in the making. My Uncle George (George Aiuvalasit) has been an incredible harmonica virtuoso all his life, but has never really been recorded properly. I decided it was time to make it happen. There was a distance factor, however, with me in Southern California and him in New Mexico. So, with the help of his friend, Spence Delanoy, George cut harmonica tracks at Spence’s home studio in Las Cruces, where they both reside. Tracks were sent back and forth between studios from Los Angeles to Las Cruces via the internet and snail mail, as we narrowed down arrangements, keys, songlist, etc. I brought in studio veteran David Kaufman on guitar to get that fat, full jazz sound. David and I have done countless studio projects together and he’s my go-to, one-take guy. As the project neared it’s completion, I pulled in one big favor from studio legend and friend Hal Blaine, who agreed to play on a few of the songs. Of course, Hal and Uncle George are from the same era, musically, so Hal got a big kick out of playing songs from the old American Standard songbook. I provided the rest of the drums (mostly done with brushes, a lost art form) as well as bass and some additional guitar. The finished product is just really listenable, smooth swinging jazz at its best. My Uncle George is truly one of the undiscovered major talents of the music world.
After only a few days in release, the CD already caught the attention of KRWG FM host Peter Michie, who immediately made track #19, “Ebbtide” his show closer on his Saturday Night jazz show, “Saturday Night Jazz with the NighTrain” (8PM-12AM Pacific, Sat nights) Hope you enjoy this true labor of love from some players who really do love the music- pure and simple!

Rock History In The Flesh (an afternoon with Hal Blaine)

•March 7, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Yesterday I got a chance to shoot out to Palm Desert and visit with my pal (and hero, mentor, etc) Hal Blaine. Hal turned 80 this year and is still pretty much a kid. It’s always great to hang out with the King, perhaps the humblest, most accomplished man alive. We cut some tracks for a secret project he’s lending me a hand on, grabbed lunch at “It’s A Deli” and smoked some cigars by the pool. He has a killer grapefruit tree that was full of fruit- best grapfruits I’ve ever had, so I nabbed a bagful before I hit the road. Priceless stuff, folks… [In the photos, you see Hal's Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame award, cigars by the pool, Hal talking shop on the phone with my wife, Marnie, and a nice view of the clouds over the mountains heading West from Ha'ls street.]

Beatlesque One in Goldmine’s Top 20 for 2008!!!

•March 5, 2009 • Leave a Comment

I’m very proud to announce that my self-released CD, BEATLESQUE ONE, was chosen by Goldmine Magazine as one of the top 20 CDs of 2008. I’m particularly happy about this because, as many of you know, the CD was recorded in a closet at my apartment in Glendale. Also, I’m in amazing company, with major artists such as Matthew Sweet, Sloan, and Lindsey Buckingham (of Fleetwood Mac) on the list.

The list appears in the Feb 27th issue, and the full review of my CD will appear in the March 13th issue. GOLDMINE should be at your local newsstand or book store. Thanks for the friendship and support.
